The Miracle of the Thumb

One week ago, I cut my thumb pretty badly on one of my new knives (thinking of getting my old ones back out!). It was a hectic day and, although it seemed to bleed more than normal and it hurt terribly for a while, I reasoned that it would be no big deal so I bandaged it up and went on with my day. When it was still hurting in the early afternoon, I decided that I should go have it looked at and probably stitched up. I called the Urgent Care Center and was told that they had just been slammed with people and that there could be quite a wait. I knew that I had to get mine and the neighbor's kids from the bus stop and take the neighbor's kids home that day so I did not want to risk getting stuck at the UCC and I did not go in. I went instead and bought some serious bandaging material. I thought that perhaps I would go later in the evening but I forgot that the youth from two wards were coming to finish their Harvest Festival parade float and everything was utter chaos. Our doctor friend who was there also took a look and said it was such a clean cut that it would probably heal up just fine.

By the next morning, there was still not much sign of closing up but I knew they would not stitch it since it had been more than 24 hours. I wrapped it all up with my mad bandaging skills and resolved to keep it dry and unused for a few days until the steri-strips started to fall off on their own.

By and by, it began to not hurt as much. I am pretty skilled with my hands, so I managed to not use that thumb at all as I went about my daily tasks. After about five days...on Sunday evening, I got the bandage wet doing some dishes. I reasoned that it would probably be looking pretty well and that I should take the wet bandage off and replace it or let my thumb air out.

To my horror, the cut had not begun to heal at all! The skin around the cut had turned white and gross-looking with no feeling attached to it. There was no scab formed whatsoever, just a gaping line. I knew I was in trouble. I thought I would go to the doctor in Utah the following morning. I was afraid they would have to cut off the dead-looking skin and try to bring it together. It did not sound pleasant to me. Then I thought of receiving a priesthood blessing of healing from Jason and my dad. I felt very positive about that option and asked them immediately. Ashtyn was still up so she got to witness it, as did my mom.

It was an incredible blessing. Not only was I blessed that my finger would heal quickly and fully but I was also blessed that, through this experience, I would come to more fully understand the healing aspect of the Atonement and that I would have a greater desire to study and learn more about the Atonement. I was also blessed with strength and wisdom to carry out all that is required of me as a mom of 5 and a busy family during the school year.......particularly with discernment to know what was of most importance and the ability to say "no" to things that were not.

I felt so happy and peaceful after the blessing. I went to bed feeling like a kid on Christmas Eve because I knew that when I woke up in the morning, my finger would be healed or well on it's way to full healing. I had to get up in the middle of the night with Baby J and the first thing I did was turn on the little light and look at my thumb --- it was a miracle! The wound was closed and dry and the white color of the skin was replaced by pink. It was a true miracle of healing, experienced in my own life. I knelt right there and said a prayer of thanks to Heavenly Father for granting me this miracle and healing. In the morning it looked even better and everyone was so amazed at the miracle. It touched all of us and I was so glad that Ashtyn could experience it with us.

Today it looks even better. I am going to post before and after and long after pictures so that I can always remember this amazing blessing and story in my life.
