I wore my new Garmin Forerunner 305 watch that I got as an early Father's Day present. It's a really nice watch and includes a heart-rate monitor. In retrospect, I wish I hadn't worn the watch since I become more concerned with mileage and heart-rate than actually running! Anyway, I thought it was neat that my heart rate was at 110 before the race even started! I was pretty excited.
The 1st 6 miles of the race was all down hill and I would have set a new 10K personal record, even though the race was at 9500ft! However, at mile 6, things changed drastically for the worse. Tons of hills, both gradual and steep, for the rest of the race. Plus, my GPS said that I actually ran 13.5 miles instead of 13.1! The worst part was that I've been battling allergies all week long and I spent the entire race coughing up junk and struggling to breathe! The race was very painful, but it was a great feeling to cross the finish line after enduring such a painful event! Here's a shot that we snapped after the race:
After finding some food to replenish the 3000+ calories that we burned, we drove the 2 hours back home. That's when I got the greatest surprise of all! Amy and the girls made a huge banner to welcome me home! They also bought me a cake and a balloon! Amy has been EXTREMELY supportive of this goal of mine and has allowed me to take the time to train and prepare! I love her so much and I'm so thankful for her support.
