After a 1.5 hour drive from our cabin, we finally arrived at Mesa Verde, definitely a highlight of the trip. We were all amazed by this place!
When we finally arrived, we bought our tickets and had a couple of hours to burn before our guided tour, so we stopped for a GREAT picnic lunch in the park. It is amazing how fun a picnic lunch can be with the family. Why isn't it this fun when we eat at home around the table? :)
This was a great shot of the ruins below us before we took our self-guided tour through the "Spruce Tree House" ruins.
Our favorite part about the "Spruce Tree House" was that we could explore and do what we wanted. It was alot of fun!
This photo shows how big the "Kiva's" were. These were places of ceremony that originally had roofs made of wood and cement.
The let you climb down into one of the "Kiva's". It was really fun for the kids.
Jantzen made a funny face during this photo, but he loved being down in the VERY dark Kiva's. The only light came from the ladder opening above.
Aubrey thought she was pretty cool in her shades. This is a picture of her right after her nap. She was a little "crabby" for a while.
Waiting for our guided tour of the "Cliff Palace", the girls decided to strike a pose! (They are so funny!)
The descent to "Cliff Palace". The kids did really well with the technical pathway to the ruins.
We posed for a family picture as we waited for the guide to arrive.
An example of the ruins. This was an amazing place!
One of the three ladders that we faced on the way out of the ruins. The kids thought it was like a giant playground!
After we finished with Mesa Verde, we drove another 1.5 hours out to 4 corners. The kids thought it was great to be in four states at once, but I'm not sure we'll ever go out there again. It was a LONG way out of the way and there's nothing there except the monument. It did provide an opportunity for Jantzen and Aubrey to run around a bunch!
